Bagmati Province Announces Public Holidays for 2083 BS

The Bagmati Province government has officially released its schedule of public holidays for the upcoming Nepali calendar year 2083 BS (starting mid-April 2026). These holidays are in addition to the national holidays announced by the Federal Government of Nepal.

To honor the diverse heritage of the province, specific holidays have been granted for certain communities and districts:

Friday: Krishna Janmashtami Holiday

Friday, September 4, 2026, marks Shree Krishna Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. This is a province-wide public holiday across all of Bagmati Province.

Saturday–Sunday: Regular Weekend

Saturday and Sunday fall as the routine weekly holidays observed throughout Nepal, extending the break immediately after Janmashtami.

Monday: Special Holiday for Nuwagi (Chonam) — Chepang Community Festival

Monday, September 7, 2026, has been declared a special public holiday for Nuwagi (Chonam), the principal cultural festival of the Chepang community, a marginalized indigenous group. This holiday applies specifically to the districts of Bagmati Province with a significant Chepang population — Chitwan, Makwanpur, Dhading, and Gorkha (and other related districts as specified).

Tuesday: Gen Z Movement Day

Nepal will observe a nationwide public holiday on Bhadra 23, 2083 BS (Tuesday, September 8, 2026) to mark Gen Z Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs’ Day). The holiday has been declared in honor of the individuals who lost their lives during the Gen Z-led movement, and it will apply across the entire country, covering all government offices, educational institutions, and public bodies nationwide. The declaration reflects the government’s recognition of the sacrifices made during the movement and is intended to allow citizens across Nepal to observe the day in remembrance of the martyrs.

According to the Ministry, this holiday has been granted in recognition of and respect for the religion, culture, and traditions of the Chepang community, as part of efforts to preserve their heritage.

What Stays Closed?

Because of this back-to-back four-day holiday, the following will remain closed through Monday:

  • Government offices across Bagmati Province
  • Educational institutions
  • Public sector bodies and agencies

Advisory for the Public

With four consecutive days off, the Ministry has urged the general public to:

  • Complete any urgent government or administrative work before the holidays begin, or
  • Plan such work only after the holiday period ends

This is meant to help citizens avoid last-minute inconvenience, since offices will not reopen until Tuesday.

Why This Matters

The Bagmati Province Government expects that this extended holiday will give citizens more ease and opportunity to celebrate the region’s diverse local cultures and festivals — including the Chepang community’s Nuwagi (Chonam) — during this festive period.
