Tribhuvan International Airport to be Closed for 5 Days! Tribhuvan International Airport Flight Status Check Now. TIA Airport Open Close Status update. Under the ‘Air Traffic Capacity Enhancement Project’ operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Tribhuvan International Airport will be closed for international flights, while modern terminal buildings, aprons, taxiways, and other infrastructure expansion works are underway.
The project has informed representatives of 40 international airlines operating domestic and international flights about the ongoing construction works in the country’s first international airport, indicating the possibility of complete or partial closure of the airport for 4/5 days. Accordingly, they have urged their airlines to manage their flights.
According to the provisions issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority has initiated consultations with airlines in the first phase.
Subsequently, as per the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aeronautical information publications (AIP) will be published with maps for the information of aviation workers worldwide. Before the suspension of flights, Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) will be issued to pilots.
According to the master plan prepared by the Asian Development Bank in 2016, aprons for international aircraft parking will be constructed northwest of the airport, parallel to both the current runways. Along with the expansion and construction of hangar areas for aircraft, three contracts worth 15 billion rupees have been operated.
Project director Engineer Deependra Shrestha has informed air service representatives, “For the expansion of these previous infrastructures, work will be completed from mid-Chaitra to mid-Asar. The airport will be closed from 11 pm to 7 am during this period. There is a high possibility of Tribhuvan International Airport operating only domestic flights or diverting international flights to Pokhara during this period.”

Due to the booking of tickets a year in advance by air travelers, the information provided may lead to operational crises, so consultations have been held regarding the first phase. According to the project, flights operated by airlines during monsoon will be limited from 11 am to 4 pm.
The authority aims to serve 10 million passengers annually at Kathmandu Airport, according to the master plan prepared in 2016, focusing on physical infrastructure construction and expansion. Currently, only 11 international flights park on the jet apron at Tribhuvan International Airport. Once all works are completed as per the master plan, 16 wide-body aircraft will be able to serve passengers on the apron.
Currently, there are no taxiways connecting both ends of the 3-kilometer runway. Taxiways will be constructed to connect both ends within two and a half years. The construction of ‘end-to-end taxiways’ will increase the capacity to handle aircraft along with the expansion of runways. According to the project chief engineer, Shrestha, ‘With the completion of construction work as per the project, issues such as holding smaller aircraft in the airspace above Simara and holding them outside Kathmandu Airport will be resolved.’
Since there are no alternative international airports in Nepal, the airport was closed from 10 pm to 8 am five years ago when the Chinese contractor company widened the runway of Tribhuvan International Airport. This time, it has been stated by the engineers involved in the construction that the airport will be closed for work of digging three meters deep in 20/25 layers as per international standards for runway safety.
‘The work of digging three meters deep at a distance of 75 meters to the right and left from the center of the runway is a very sensitive task. Due to the lack of space in the construction area, many machines/tools cannot be used. Therefore, the airport will be closed for the work, which will also result in holding of large jets for takeoff and landing,’ said Shrestha. ‘Contractor companies, consultants, and engineers of the authority are studying this issue together.’
Previously, under the centralized planning of Kathmandu Airport, old aircraft were relocated from the apron area, and two hangars of Shree Airlines were shifted within 15 days. In Wednesday’s consultation, representatives from three different projects operating at the airport have indicated that with the parallel taxiway construction, the aircraft’s takeoff and landing burden will be reduced.
