The Judicial Reform Commission (1983) recommended for the establishment of a well equipped and independent forensic science laboratory in the country. In the wake of this recommendation, the National Forensic Science Laboratory was set up and run under the aegis of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) from 1986 to 1995. From 1995 to 2000 the laboratory was under the Ministry of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs as an autonomous organization. As per the decision of Government of Nepal, this laboratory is now running as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology.
