Nepal declares day of mourning for Gen Z movement Shok Bida. In a significant decision, the Nepali government has declared Ashoj 1 (September 17) as a Day of Mourning. This solemn day will honor those who lost their lives during the recent “Gen Z movement.”
The announcement came after a cabinet meeting held on Monday. Home and Law Minister Omprakash Aryal confirmed the decision, stating that a public holiday will be observed nationwide on Ashoj 1.
Honoring the Fallen: The government has also taken several steps to provide national recognition to the victims:

- Individuals who died during the Gen Z movement have been declared martyrs.
- Their bodies will be draped with the national flag.
- They will be given a national honor funeral.
The Human Cost of the Gen Z Movement: The Gen Z protests had a profound impact across the country. According to official figures:
- A total of 72 people lost their lives.
- 2,316 individuals sustained injuries.
- Currently, 283 people are still receiving treatment in various hospitals nationwide for injuries sustained during the movement.
This declaration of a Day of Mourning and the granting of martyr status underscores the government’s acknowledgement of the sacrifices made during the Gen Z movement. It provides a moment for the nation to reflect on the events and honor the lives lost.
