Class 12 Passed in any Subject can study General Nursing Education

The most revolutionary aspect of this decision is that students who have completed their Class 12 in any stream can now study General Nursing. Previously, nursing programs, particularly BSc Nursing, were restricted to students who had completed their Class 12 in Science stream only. According to Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Medical Education Commission, this marks the first time in Nepal’s history that General Nursing has been made accessible to students from all academic backgrounds.

Expansion in Medical Education

The meeting also brought forth several other important decisions:

The Commission approved an additional 209 seats in government health institutions for postgraduate medical studies (MD/MS). These additional seats will allow more students to pursue their postgraduate medical education free of cost, significantly expanding opportunities in medical education.

International Student Quota Discussion

Another crucial point of discussion during the meeting was the proposal to increase the quota for foreign students in private medical colleges. Currently, medical colleges are allowed to admit foreign students up to 10% of their total seats. This proposal is particularly significant as it relates to the implementation of residential allowances for medical residents.

Financial Support for Medical Residents

The Commission’s 16th meeting, held on Magh 25, had previously decided that private medical colleges must provide their residential doctors (students) with a subsistence allowance equivalent to government rates (Level 8) – NPR 48,436 per month.

The Commission also assured that existing nursing programs would continue alongside these new opportunities, ensuring a comprehensive approach to nursing education in Nepal.

These changes reflect a progressive shift in Nepal’s medical education system, aimed at creating more opportunities while maintaining educational standards and addressing the healthcare sector’s growing needs.
