The virus that causes monkeypox belongs to the category of smallpox virus. However, experts say it is less serious and less contagious.
- The disease is mostly found in remote areas near the tropical rainforests of Central and West African countries.
- There are two strains of this virus, West African and Central African. This virus is said to have spread elsewhere from Africa.
The virus has been widely discussed since its outbreak in Europe last year. According to the Ministry of Health of Nepal, this virus has been seen in 111 countries so far. However, the outbreak is not yet a public health emergency of global concern.
Mode of transmission
i. Human-to-human transmission can occur through
a. direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs, or body fluids
b. respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face contact, or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling, or sex
c. touching items (such as clothing or linens) that previously touched the infectious rash or body fluids
d. pregnant women can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta
What are the symptoms of Monkeypox Virus Infection?
- Early symptoms of infection include fever,
- Headache,
- Joint swelling,
- Back pain,
- Muscle aches, and rash.
- Once a fever occurs, the rash may initially spread to the face and other parts of the body, often the palms and soles.

How to avoid infection from Monkeypox Virus?

- It is suggested to isolate the infected person at home or in the hospital.
- Likewise, those caring for the infected should fully comply with public health standards.
- If there is a risk of direct contact with the wound, recommends wearing gloves, regularly washing hands with soapy water or using sanitizer, and washing clothes, bedding and utensils of infected persons with hot water or soapy water.
- Don’t come into contact with animals that are sick or dead and have been confirmed to be infected with monkeypox, test people who have been in contact with infected people, disinfect surfaces or rooms that have been in contact with infected people,
- Actions such as eating meat-based food should be done only after it is properly cooked, waste should be managed in the proper place.

What is the treatment for the Monkeypox Virus?
There is currently no cure for monkeypox. But infection can be prevented and outbreaks can be controlled. The smallpox vaccine is 85 percent effective in preventing infection with this virus. That is why the vaccine is still used.
But since smallpox has been eradicated, there is no such vaccine in the Nepal government’s stock.
